Présentation du "Villars Vanguard Jazz Orchestra"

Regroupant des musiciens enthousiastes provenant de la région de Villars-sur-Ollon et de ses environs chablaisiens, le Villars Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, mené à l’origine par Andrew Gray, a fait ses débuts en décembre 2006 au Montreux Palace. Cet événement sera suivi d’un premier concert dans sa commune d’origine, en février 2007, qui a connu un grand succès. Depuis lors, d’autres concerts à succès ont eu lieu, dont un sur les quais de Montreux en 2008 ainsi qu’aux festivités du 1er Août à Villars en 2009.

Le Villars Vanguard accorde une importance particulière au fait qu’il s’agit, avant tout, d’un ensemble de musiciens qui ont un plaisir réel à se retrouver chaque semaine dans le but partagé d'interpréter une musique engageante et pleine d’esprit, à la fois exigeante et plaisante. En font partie des habitants de tout âge des communes de Villars, Gryon, Bex, Aigle et Villeneuve venant d’horizons sociaux professionnels très divers mais réunis par leur amour du répertoire de Jazz écrit par les plus grands compositeurs de musique pour Big Band à partir des années cinquantes (Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Sonny Rollins, Bob Mintzer etc..).

L’ensemble se caractérise par sa rigueur et sa bonne humeur avec une certaine ambition, certes, mais sans prétention. Le répertoire est à la fois accessible et intéressant. Aussi cosmopolite que le village dont il porte le nom, le Villars Vanguard se compose d’un étonnant éventail de nationalités, regroupant un nombre égal de francophones et d’anglophones.

Depuis septembre 2009, l’ensemble est placé sous la direction de Christian Rudaz.

Après leur grand succès en 2010, nous retrouvons l’orchestre aux Classiques de Villars 2011.

August 2006: a sun-drenched larch-board terrace ; a round wooden table; a cloudless alpine sky; a backdrop of summer summits and eternal ice-fields; a bottle of chilled Chasselas perspiring next to two filled glasses; an enigmatic baritone saxophonist; an effusive alto saxophonist; a shared passion; a marriage of reckless optimism and cautious pragmatism; out of all this would come the conception of the Villars Vanguard.  The seed sown by Jean Guarneri and Richard McDonald in September 2006 quickly germinated, and in no time the VV was flourishing.  Gathering together an array of enthusiastic musicians of all ages in the Villars and Chablais locality, under the skilled directorship of Andy Gray, The Villars Vanguard was able to make its debut at the Montreux Palace in December 2006, and made its first public appearance in the Villars area in February 2007, to a warm reception.

The Villars Vanguard prides itself on a number of qualities.  First and foremost, it is for musicians who truly enjoy the experience of meeting weekly with a shared musical objective: to generate music that is spirited, engaging, challenging and pleasurable.  The ensemble is characterized by both musical rigour and good humour, by ambition and a lack of pretention.  Its repertoire is chosen to be both widely accessible and yet musically interesting.

In keeping with its cosmopolitan setting, the Villars Vanguard can boast an unusually international composition, and is truly a bilingual ensemble, comprising an equal number of anglophones and francophones.
